That&#8217;s why the problem is still <strong>invisible<\/strong> to the majority. Nevertheless, now it&#8217;s the perfect time to work on it: the population  in Europe is growing older and, at the same time, it&#8217;s abandoning the small towns, in favour of the cities &#8211; moreover, by 2020 the EU is expected to have 120 million people with disabilities. That&#8217;s why cities need to be adapted to the <strong>upcoming needs<\/strong> of their inhabitants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The contest <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Access City Award\u00a0<\/strong>answers exactly to this purpose. It pursues three main goals: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>provide to organisations and municipalities the chance to have their <strong>project <\/strong>funded;<\/li><li>share and exchange <strong>good practices<\/strong> among municiplaities;<\/li><li>and, of course, cities with better <strong>facilities<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>purpose <\/strong>of the award is to recognises and celebrates\u00a0a city&#8217;s willingness, ability and efforts\u00a0to become more <strong>accessible,<\/strong>\u00a0in order to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>guarantee equal access to <strong>fundamental rights<\/strong>;<\/li><li>improve the <strong>quality of life<\/strong> of its population and ensure that everybody \u2013 regardless of age, mobility or ability \u2013 has equal access to all the resources and pleasures cities have to offer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/youthnetworks.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/italy-381230_1280-1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can participate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The contest is open to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>all <strong>EU cities<\/strong> of over 50 000 inhabitants;<\/li><li><strong>urban areas<\/strong> composed of two or more towns with a combined population of over 50 000 inhabitants, if they are in EU countries with fewer than 2 cities with over 50 000 inhabitants.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As one can see, entries must be submitted by the <strong>local municipality<\/strong> or <strong>mayoral office<\/strong>. This means that, if you&#8217;re an organisation or association whishing to participate to the contest, you should contact the respecitve offices and propose to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Here  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accesscityaward.eu\/registration\/initialize.xhtm?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Here <\/a>there is the <strong>application form<\/strong>. The award is implemented within the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020, that implies, among others, the worki towards a barrier-free Europe.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much is the prize?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>2019 marks the 10th annyversary of ACA. The European Commission is then going to award the winning cities with a total of <strong>EUR 350.000<\/strong>, to be split among the first three cities that scored the best result. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Deadline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline to submit the projects is set on <strong>11 September 2019<\/strong>, 24:00 CET. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Architectural barriers: you don&#8217;t realize how many they are until you happen to be in the conditions of dealing with them.
